Are van clearances cheaper than skips?

One of the issues we come across frequently at ADC is people asking about our Alternative to Skip Hire Service. They wonder “Are van clearances cheaper than skips?” in comparison to a traditional skip. So we decided to put together a post on how to decide which service is better for you.  They wonder if it is really true that van clearances are cheaper than skips?

There are a few situations where we believe you would be better of having a skip. However, there are also a lot of situations where having a skip can be a hassle and more expensive making the van clearance a better option. So let’s get right into it with which is better for you.  You should consider some key areas, including: price, ease of use, and aesthetics.

Price

Now both services tend to have a comparable price for most of the things which you need clearing. For items such as mixed general waste, green waste and wood van clearance is often cheaper than skip hire because not only do you get the waste cleared you also get the service of two operatives so you don’t have to lift a finger. The only time when Skip Hire could be cheaper is when the waste you need to get rid of is rubble, plaster or soil. As this is more expensive to get rid of than mixed waste because of the weight restrictions placed on the vans and normally requires more than one trip.

Another problem with Skip Hire is even if you don’t have enough waste to fill a skip you have to pay for the full skip whereas if you use a van clearance service you only pay for the amount of waste you need removing.

Consider this example taken from a skip company in Leeds I found on Google.

  • Weight: 4 Cubic Yards (equivalent to a midi skip)
  • Leeds Skip Company: £133.00
  • ADC Property Solutions Van Clearance: £110.00

Winner: Van clearance

So not only do you make a saving of £23 you also get all the other benefits of van clearance which we will discuss below!

Ease of use and service

Are van clearances cheaper than skips? For ease of use yes

Now depending on if you have a couple of strapping young men to help you with loading your skip. Van clearances tend to edge it in this category also. Usually, van clearances come with two men to help load up all of your waste so you don’t have to get your hands dirty. As well as this the waste is removed within a matter of hours instead of having a skip on your drive for a few months. Also, van clearance teams tend to sweep up after they have left leaving your property in good condition.

This is something Skip Companies rarely do and we constantly receive reports from our customers saying that they have had a bad experience with Skip Companies. Customer service is also better from a Van Clearance perspective as you have two operatives to ask any questions of if you need any help as well being able to pay cash when .

Winner: Van clearance

Van clearance is the winner here because they usually come with two operatives to load the waste for you and clean up after themselves. Along with the customer service element of having two operatives you can ask any questions of and have the opportunity to pay them cash once finished or over the phone.

Aesthetics

Are van clearances cheaper than skips? For aesthetics yes

Usually, most of our customers are not a big fan of having a large aesthetically unappealing skip on their drive all day. This isn’t particularly pretty for places like commercial shopping areas or town centres where the presence of a large skip can put off potential customers. Where as Van clearances are only around for the time taken for the job to be completed and look better than two large yellow builders skips with waste being piled up and having members of the public throw rubbish into them as well.

As well as this Van Clearance services usually use trained operatives in dashing uniforms which also reflect that your establishment is professional.

Winner: Van Clearance

Once again Van Clearance has taken the win as they disappear once the job is done and the general public can’t throw rubbish into them!

So when is a skip better?

There are only a few situations when we think a skip is better suited to your needs as a customer and these are below.

When you are wanting to slowly clear the house at your own pace while sorting through your valuables
When you have other people who have already volunteered their time to help you load the skip
When you are getting rid of waste such as rubble, soil and plaster

Overall Winner: Van Clearances

Overall the winner of all three categories is Van Clearances due to having two operatives to load the waste, not having a ugly skip on your drive and most of all the price is usually cheaper for a better quality service!
